El Salvador - Monday

Today was our first day on the job. Drove to Ahuachapán to pick up some construction supplies and then drove to the jobsite at La Labor.

The 800 square foot area had already been marked off. Some men were digging a ditch for the footings. We grabbed shovels and pick axes and began to level out the area where the slab will be poured. The dirt was wet from the rains and it was very difficult to dig up. It seemed like forever and we had made very little headway. Based on our first 30 minutes of production, it was clear that we may not make it back to the USA before the end of October!

Fortunately we found out that some of the fathers of the children that are fed at the feeding station were without work. We hired five of them to help us. It was as different as night and day. Those guys, unlike the three of us, really know how to use a shovel.

It rained off and on so we stopped at least four times to let the rain blow over. This gave us a chance to visit with the dads.

Lunch came around and we got to see 122 children eat a healthy lunch. This feeding center serves children up through 12 years of age. They were served a nutritional drink, some vegetables and a soy substitute for meat. The kids bring their own dishes and cups. All the kids were smiling and very talkative. As they left they all said "gracias."

By late afternoon we had made a sizable dent and were making changes to the blueprints for the center. Tomorrow we will have all of the fathers back and will try to get the footings poured.

Was wondering why God only gave us three people for this team. Beginning to understand why. We are doing a lot of scrambling and smaller teams make this much easier to do!

A shower and dinner back at the hotel. Sit out on the front deck and talk about the day. Can't wait for tomorrow.
