Every detail of your day matters to God. Yes, it is hard to fathom that the God of the Universe, the Creator of all we know and imagine cares about the details of your life. Yet that is what the Bible says -
“And whatever you do, in word or in deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus …”
Not only does everything you do matter to God, but also everything you do is to be done in the name of Jesus. To do something in the name of Jesus is to do it as if He were in your place.
Don’t think of this as another item on a to-do list that is already too long to be realistic. The challenge is to do what you already do in Jesus’ name! Think of what this would look like when you wake up, eat breakfast, drive, work or watch TV. What would change?
How can you live every detail of your day in the name of Jesus?
1. Start your day when your head hits the pillow at night. The Old Testament teaches that the day starts in the evening (Genesis 1:5). Doing this reinforces your dependence on God. Ask Him to fill your thoughts with His thoughts. When you wake up, His thoughts will be your first thoughts.
2. At the end of the day review your day. Picture a coach watching the game film after a close game. Like the little guy in the Where’s Waldo? book, you will discover God in places you never expected. Two things will happen – you will become aware of negative patterns in your day and you will be awed by God’s presence.
3. Take this challenge one day at a time. Like the manna God gave to the Israelites in the desert, it comes in one-day doses. The Bible says, “each day has enough trouble of it own”(Matt. 6:34).
4. Practice this today by living one area of your life (driving, work, watching TV) in Jesus’ name.
If you live each day as if every detail matters to God, every detail will begin to matter to you. And when that happens you will discover the key role you play in God’s plan to redeem this world.
